Vaccination vs. Death Rates Under Omicron
Saw this table of data in an NBC news story and thought “lets see it as a plot.” There is a recent CDC study claiming the risk of omicron hopsitialization is about 1/5th if vaccinated vs. not vaccinated, and 23 times lower if boosted so I was curious to plot out the NBC table and see if there was a trend. In this fatality vs vacc plot, there is a clear trend…and a lot of scatter around it.
The biggest shortcoming of this quick look is there is no accounting for number of cases per 100k. The raw fatality rate would be a better y-axis, but I am not going to take the time to find how many cases each state has seen since 12/13. The state on the upper left is Tennessee and left edge is Mississippi. Another breakdown might be by county, but there will be more scatter since the statistics on numbers of deaths will be low.
The lower right are Guam, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and (surprise!) Vermont.
